Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary location

Ziwa Rhino sanctuary is located in Nakasongola district, about 180 Kilometers from Kampala city on the way to Murchison falls national park. By road, transfer from Kampala lasts for 3 to 4 hours to the only home to rhino in the country. The sanctuary covers an area of 70 Sq Km and  governed by Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The establishment of the Sanctuary

Both the Black Rhinoceros (rhinos) and the Northern white rhinoceros are indigenous to Uganda. However, due to a number of factors, including prolonged armed human conflict, poaching and the mismanagement of the natural habitat. By 1982, both species had been wiped out in the country. Ziwa rhino sanctuary  established in 2005. To reintroduce the southern white rhinos to Uganda and only 6 rhinos introduced in 2006.

The long-term goal of the sanctuary is to build a sustainable rhinos population and relocate them back to their original habitat in Uganda’s protected areas, the national parks. As of today, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary the only location in Uganda, where rhinos  observed in their natural habitat. There are 42 rhinos in the sanctuary at the moment and tracked by visitors imported from Kenya and USA.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary rates and best time to visit

Rhino tracking is at a fee of $ 50 for Nonresidents and $40 for East African residents.  Different activities take place at the sanctuary and Rhino trekking as the major activity. Other activities include; birding, hiking, night-time nature walks, shoebill trek and canoe ride.

The best time to visit Ziwa rhino sanctuary is in the months of June to August, January and February. This is a time when the vegetation is not tall or thick thus best visibility due to less or no rain. The sanctuary also  visited any time of the year because tracking rhinos done throughout the year.
